Price Segement: Rs. 4000 – 7000

 

This segment has grown significantly over the last few years. First time smartphone users want to start with a low budget.

Now let us have a look at the contenders

 

Xiomi Redmi 4A:

 

This is a budget offering from the company priced at Rs. 5999.

 

It sports a snapdragon 425 CPU which is adequate for the users planning to buy in this segment. A 13 megapixel camera with f2.2 aperture a 5inch 720p display and a 3030 Mah battery. As an additional treat there is dual sim capability with support for micro sd to bolster the 16gb internal storage. An IR blaster is also included. Sold exclusively via Amazon.

 

Pros

  • A nice display for the segment.
  • Good camera but in indoor lighting it fails.
  • Great battery life
  • Light in weight
  • Nice call quality
  • Supports VoLTE (For Jio etc.)
  • IR blaster that can be used as a universal remote
  • All imp sensors are present like compass, gyroscope etc.
  • Games well but with games like asphalt 8, there is a lag.

 

Cons

  • The touch capacitive buttons are not backlit
  • Camera in indoor conditions falters
  • Hybrid Sim card slot, no dedicated SD card slot
  • Runs Mi Ui 8 which is a far call from stock anroid and needs some getting use to.
  • Made of polycarbonate and not metal.
  • No fast charging
  • No mention of which glass used on screen

 

Moto C/ Moto C plus

 

A budget offering by Moto which in one word is a disappointment. Moto C has a 5 inch 480p display with a Mediatek Cpu. While the Moto C plus has a 720p panel.

 

A 5mp rear camera and a 2 mp front facing camera. Moto C sells at local shops only for Rs 6300, while the Moto C Plus is sold on flipkart for Rs. 6999. Comes with 16gb internal storage and 2gb of ram.

 

Pros

  • Decent battery life.
  • Has a front facing flash
  • Runs close to stock anroid and here it runs anroid 7.0
  • Removable back panel which allows access to dedicated sim and SD card slots.
  • Brand value of moto.

 

Cons

  • Bad camera that rarely gets a good shot
  • Capacitive keys not backlit
  • No fast charging
  • Bad build quality
  • No mention of which glass used on screen

 

Micromax Evok Power

 

A budget offering by micromaz which comes with a 5 inch 720p display 16gb of storage and 2 gb of ram.

 

Pros

  • Battery life is very good
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • On screen navigation keys
  • Comes with gorilla glass 3
  • Dedicated micro sd card slot.
  • Selfie camera is decent for the price

 

Cons

  • Mediatek processor
  • Lot of bloat
  • Display is not responsive
  • Thick black bezels along the screen
  • Camera performance is poor

 

Redmi 4

 

Yet another budget offering by Xiomi which comes with an updated Snapdragon 435 and a massive 4000 mah battery.

 

A 13 megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front camera. A 5 inch 720pdisplay and a metal uni-body design. Sold exclusively via Amazon and this variant costs Rs. 5999.

  • 2 gb of ram with 16 gb storage

  • Phone tends to heat over heavy usage
  • Runs Mi Ui

  • No mention of which glass used to protect the screen

Price Segment: RS 7000-15000

 

Redmi 4

 

Yet another budget offering by Xiomi which comes with an updated Snapdragon 435 and a massive 4100 mah battery.

 

A 13 megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front camera. A 5 inch 720pdisplay and a metal uni-body design.Sold exclusively via Amazon and this variant costs Rs. 7000. This variant comes with 32 gb storage and 3 gb ram.

  • Best processor in price category
  • 2 gb of ram with 16 gb storage
  • VoLTE support
  • Decent cameras
  • Ships with fingerprint scanner

  • Good fingerprint scanner
  • Decent camera duo
  • Semi metal body

 

Cons

  • Processor is mid-tear
  • Competitors offer better specs
  • Weird combo of metal and plastic

 

Honor 6X

 

A crisp 5.5 inch display with a quick fingerprint scanner. Best in class camera and an added benefit of dual cameras on the back that function similar to the iphone 7 plus, obviously not as good. A beautiful design at a reasonale price. Sold at 11999 for 3gb ram and 32gb storage while the 4gb ram and 64 storage costs Rs. 13999. Sold exclusively on amazon.

  • Amazing camera
  • Very good battery life
  • Awesome performance

        

Cons

  • No fast charging
  • No mention of screen protection

 

Moto G5 plus

 

Now priced at Rs. 14999. It has a 5.3 inch display and is mated to 4 gb ram. Under the hood is the best snapdragon mid tear chipset, the 625. Its camera performance is amazing.

 

Pros

  • Good battery life
  • Small formfactor
  • Great camera performance

 

Cons

  • No guarantee on software updates
  • Priced higher than it should be

 

VERDICT: IF one had to buy a phone, it would be the Xiomi MI 4, but if my budget was tight then Redmi 4A
